PAROS

Paros belongs to the central group of the Cyclades and is 95 n.m. from Piraeus. Parikia is the picturesque port of the island, built on the bay sheltering the port from the northern winds. The island is oval-shaped with a mountain in the middle, surrounded by a valley which rolls down to the sea. Paros is not very green. The inhabitants grow barley and corn, and there are many vineyards and animal breeding. Paros attracts many visitors, it has pretty Cycladic architecture, windmills, a large Byzantine church, a monastery and many picturesque spots. It produces the best white marble in the world, of which the statues of the Venus of Milos and Hermes of Praxiteles were sculpted. As with most Cycladic islands, Paros was first inhabited by the Ionians. During the Frankish occupation it was part of the Duchy of Naxos It was occupied by the Turks in 1537, and liberated in 1821. It is connected by ferry-boat with Piraeus and Rafina, and serviced by the small aircraft of the Olympic Airways.

ANTIPAROS

Antiparos is a small island 4 n.m, to the southwest of Paros, inhabited by fishermen and cattle-breeders. It used to be united with Paros. It has low hills, many beautiful beaches, and is surrounded by other smaller islands which form narrow crossings with shallow, blue-green water. Antiparos is famous for its cave.

HISTORY

Between Paros and Antiparos there is a small island (Saliangos) where a neolithic settlement dating from approximately 4000 B.C. was discovered in 1964. This enhances the theory that the two islands were united at that time, and that the first man in Antiparos appeared in the neolithic age.  In historical years, Antiparos was called Oliaros. Paros is a favorite among the younger tourists because of the availability of campings and the intense night life.  The island has very fine beaches all around it with crystal clear waters.  Like all the Cycladic islands it has the charactersistic Cycladic architecture with the narrow tiled roads among beautiful houses and tourist shops, and bars and restaurants...  The usual means for visiting are the boats that sail from Piraeus. It is very close to Naxos and Santorini, so the visitors usually visit Paros and then they continue on to Naxos and Santorini or to Mikonos.  It is about 5-6 hours boat ride from Piraeus and then only about one more to Naxos and then one more to Santorini.  If you decide to visit Paros you will not regret it.  There is excellent seafood, and the walks through the town or on the beach, with the summer breeze during the sunsets will be an experience to remember.
